Historical Origin
The citadel occupies a site inhabited since the Neolithic era. It was the seat of the Counts of Namur starting in the 10th century. Throughout history, it was besieged repeatedly by Spanish, French, Austrian, and Dutch forces, earning Namur the title of "the Anthill of Europe." Major reconstructions were led by the French military architect Vauban in the 17th century and the Dutch in the 19th century.
